Kravitz, Rourke head to Brazil for Blind Bastard Club

Ash-Baron Cohen to direct the $6m film.

Rock star Lenny Kravitz, Mickey Rourke and Rosario Dawson are to star in Ash Baron-Cohen’s $6 million The Blind Bastard Club, due to shoot in April in Brazil.
Rodrigo Santoro and Riccardo Scamarcio will also star.

The film is being produced by Hacienda (Andrew Mysko and Cory Neal) and by Frank Desmarais. The coproducer is Urca (Leo Edde). Executive producer is Donald K Ranvaud of Buena Onda. A major Latin American company is also in talks to board the project.

The BBC, or Blind Bastard Club, is a gang of guys and girls who live life on the edge despite being blind by going to the shooting range,jumping out of planes, getting into fights in bars, and pretending they’re not blind. The film focuses on Jake, the leader of the BBC,and Angel, a sighted call girl whorollerblades around the city. They meet by accident, and he introduces her to his world as they both look to make the ultimate sacrifice for love.

The film, previously set up in New Orleans, will be crewed entirely by Brazilians. Ranvaud (who worked on previously Brazilian hits City of God and Central Station) has been in Berlin this week to announce the project. A sales agent is expected to be announced shortly.

Lenny Kravitz, shortly to release his first album in several years, is a huge star in Brazil. In 2007, he played concerts on Copacabana Beach in front of audiences of hundreds of thousands.

European digital distribution network Ichnos launches with Venice titles

A new plan for a pan-European digital distribution network specially for festival films was announced in Venice.

Ichnos ( which means ‘footprint’), which has the support of satellite company Astra, aims eventually to provide four to five festival films a month for one screening only at ahost of cinemas across Europe.

The company has already come to a deal with the Biennale to show the winner of Venice’s Contracampo section as well as selected films from the festival’s Horizons section. Among the titles that will be showcased are Aureliano Amadel’s 20 Cigarettes and Gianfranco Rosi’s El Sicario 164.

The new initiative is spearheaded by producer Donald K Ranvaud of Buena Onda films and Marta Bifano of Loups Garoux.

Producer Donald K Ranvaud of Buena Onda is representing the estate of Richard Brautigan (pictured), the American author who committed suicide in 1984. He was best known for novels including Trout Fishing In America and A Confederate General From Big Sur.

WORKSHOP SESSIONS IN YOTALA

"Buena Onda and La Fabrica film school join forces with Teatro de Los Andes, for the launch of “Workshop Sessions in Yotala”, Bolivia.

The workshops will be based in the idyllic location of Yotala, home to the Teatro de los Andes, a self-sustaining theatre company founded in 1991, where plays are prepared, presented, and then taken on tour around the globe.

This unique trio of diverse experiences aims to establish a place, both physical and conceptual, where film and theatre exist in a constant dialogue, fully aware of the creative, the social and the authentic aspects of collaborative arts.

The workshops will include:

Acting technique for theatre and film.

Work in progress dialogues with international filmmakers.

Open Master Classes with special international guests.

Community participation in activities aimed at sustainable art presented through sustainable development in the region: a sharing of knowledge with the communities around the Yotala area and the Teatro de los Andes experience.

Working with local cultural heritage, focusing on textile art and anthropological knowledge.

Yotala will also offer screening space for documentaries and films related to problems rooted in Latin America, such as water, political disassociation, native agriculture policies, and creating established social environments.

The workshops will all be documented and the final product will be developed as a film on the topics of discussion."
